Every country in the world dreams of the World Cup — but it only comes around once every four years, and there’s only room for 48 teams. With 211 national teams out there, most of them won’t make it. So how do you earn one of the golden tickets?
The world is split into six regions (FIFA calls them confederations). For two or three years, long before the World Cup tournament even starts, the teams in each region play a long series of qualifying matches against each other. The best teams from each region earn a spot.
That’s 46 spots. (*North & Central America’s share includes the three host countries.)
The countries hosting the tournament get in automatically — no qualifying needed. For 2026 that’s the USA, Canada, and Mexico, sharing hosting duties for the first time ever.
The final two are the most dramatic. Six teams that just missed out in their own regions meet at a mini-tournament called the inter-confederation playoff, where they battle for the last two tickets.
